The psychology of the cold call
Cold calling objection

How to respond to “That's too expensive.”

Try this: “I hear you. Compared with what? I'd like to understand what you were expecting.”

What it usually means

The value hasn't landed yet, or the number surprised them.

What to say

You
I hear you. Compared with what? I'd like to understand what you were expecting.

Replace anything in brackets with your own words before you say it.

Why it works

Too expensive only means something next to a comparison. Asking what they expected brings out the real anchor, so you know what you're actually being measured against.

Other ways prospects say it

  • “That's more than we pay now.”
  • “Your price is too high.”
  • “That's out of our range.”

Same reflex, same response. Type any version into the Objection Lookup to check.

If they push back again

If price is truly the block, ask what result would make it worth the number. If none would, it's a budget problem, not a price problem.

The pattern behind every objection

Acknowledge it with something short and human, ask one question about what sits behind it, then propose a small next step with two options, or exit cleanly. Handle each objection once, never argue it, and log every one so you can see where your message or your list is weak.

Questions

What does “That's too expensive.” usually mean?
The value hasn't landed yet, or the number surprised them.
Should I offer a discount when they say it's too expensive?
Not first. Ask what they're comparing it with. The answer tells you whether the value hasn't landed or the budget truly isn't there.
