The psychology of the cold call
Cold calling objection

How to respond to “We're not looking right now.”

Try this: “Understood, I didn't expect you to be. Out of curiosity, what would need to change for [problem] to move up your list?”

What it usually means

No active project, which is normal on a cold call. You called them, not the other way around.

What to say

You
Understood, I didn't expect you to be. Out of curiosity, what would need to change for [problem] to move up your list?

Replace anything in brackets with your own words before you say it.

Why it works

Saying you didn't expect them to be looking removes the pressure. Asking what would need to change tells you exactly what your next call should be about.

Other ways prospects say it

  • “We're not in the market.”
  • “No active project.”
  • “Not shopping for that.”

Same reflex, same response. Type any version into the Objection Lookup to check.

If they push back again

If nothing would change it, ask when they'd want a check-in and leave it there. Being remembered as easy to talk to is worth more than this call.

The pattern behind every objection

Acknowledge it with something short and human, ask one question about what sits behind it, then propose a small next step with two options, or exit cleanly. Handle each objection once, never argue it, and log every one so you can see where your message or your list is weak.

Questions

What does “We're not looking right now.” usually mean?
No active project, which is normal on a cold call. You called them, not the other way around.
Is "not looking" a reason to hang up?
No. On a cold call almost nobody is looking; you called them. Ask what would need to change for the problem to move up, and listen.
