The psychology of the cold call
Cold calling objection

How to respond to “We tried something like this.”

Try this: “Sorry to hear that. What went wrong? I'd like to know if we'd have the same problem.”

What it usually means

They got burned and don't want to feel foolish twice. That experience is now the filter you're judged through.

What to say

You
Sorry to hear that. What went wrong? I'd like to know if we'd have the same problem.

Replace anything in brackets with your own words before you say it.

Why it works

Asking what went wrong shows you're not defensive and lets them be heard first. Their answer tells you whether that experience really applies to you.

Other ways prospects say it

  • “We tried that and it didn't work.”
  • “We've been burned before.”
  • “We had a tool like this.”

Same reflex, same response. Type any version into the Objection Lookup to check.

If they push back again

If they don't want to revisit it, respect that and ask what they'd need to see to look again. Their answer is your next conversation.

The pattern behind every objection

Acknowledge it with something short and human, ask one question about what sits behind it, then propose a small next step with two options, or exit cleanly. Handle each objection once, never argue it, and log every one so you can see where your message or your list is weak.
